The Pursuit of Holiness

April 17, 2012

You might not be looking for one, but here’s a great little book on living out God’s design for your life. God told the Israelites, “Be holy, for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44). And in a letter to the early churches, Peter echoed this command (1 Peter 1:16). The clear biblical teaching is that God expects people to pursue holiness because He (our Creator and Ruler) is holy.

Jerry Bridges gives a biblical and practical resource that accomplished two things in me.

First, I was challenged to want to be holy. While I know I need to be holy and I know I should want to be holy, unfortunately I don’t always desire holiness. The book helped me on a motivational level.

Second, I was encouraged and instructed on how to pursue holiness. Perhaps most helpful was the distinction between the pursuit of “victory over sin” versus the pursuit of “obedience to God.” The former, which is how I have often thought of this pursuit, is oriented toward self. The latter, which is the biblical way, is oriented toward God. This shift is critical to walking in holiness. The book helped me on a practical level.

The edition I have is less than 160 pages, relatively easy to read, and deeply helpful for the soul.

  1. I actually JUST wrote in my prayer journal, today, about the struggle in my own life for “victory over sin”. It’s so true that this is a misplaced focus. Thanks for the reminder!
